FAZ: The “Iranization” of Turkey under Erdogan

“Modern Iranian woman holding up placard arrested by Turkish policeman wearing headscarf!” comments a Turkish journalist in the German newspaper

On the occasion of the developments in IranTurkish journalist Bulent Mumay, a former columnist for the Radikal newspaper, records his observations on Turkey in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).

“It is undeniable that after the change of government in 2002 our country became more conservative, that we have moved away both from the way of life of a secular state and from the principles of the Western Republic. What has been happening in recent days in Iran suggests that this country is getting closer to (old) Turkey, while Turkey is being Iranized».

“For her murder Mahsa Amini in Iran, which did not wear the headscarf ‘correctly’, there were also demonstrations in Istanbul. In the first demonstration in Taksim Square, in the center of the city, Iranians living in Istanbul were in the front line. Without headscarves, Iranian women wanted to protest with placards in Persian and Turkish. Do you know what happened to the fashionable woman from Iran who held up a placard at the top of the march? She was arrested by a Turkish police officer wearing a headscarf!” says the journalist.
