The inauguration of the Piraeus metro on Monday – What changes to Line 3 and bus routes

With the opening of the “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theater” stations, a daily increase in total passenger traffic on the metro network is expected

It takes effect from the following Tuesday, October 11the day after the inauguration of the three new stations of the extension of Metro line 3 in Piraeus, “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” “Municipal Theatre”, the redesign of bus lines in the wider area.

According to OASA, it aims at the interoperability of the road transport network with the three new stations and follows previous interventions when the first three stations of the Metro extension in Piraeus (Agia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia) were put into operation.

With the opening of the “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theater” stations, a daily increase in total passenger traffic on the metro network is expected by 132,000 passengers, reducing daily, both the traffic of vehicles by 23,000, and carbon dioxide emissions by 120 tons. With the extension of the metro network by 3.2 km, line 3 “Municipal Theatre-Dukissis Plakentias-Airport” numbers now 27 stations.

The frequency of the routes in the Municipal Theater section of Dukissis Placentia during peak hours (07.30-11.00 & 13:30 – 17:30) remains at 4′ and at night hours (22:00 – 00:20) it is reduced to 9′ from 10′ . In the Airport-Municipal Theater section, the frequency is 36 minutes.

The first itinerary from the stations Municipal Theater and Duchess of Placentia will start at 05:30. First services at 05:30 will also start from the stations Egaleo and Monastiraki in the direction of Dukissis Placentias and from the National Defense station in the direction of the Municipal Theater. The last itinerary (Monday-Thursday & Sunday) from the Municipal Theater will take place at 23:59 and from Dukissis Placentias at 00:03. Friday and Saturday, when the extension of operating hours applies, the last trains will depart at 01:06 from the Municipal Theater and at 01:10 from Dukissis Placentias. Last trains from Syntagma station in all directions will depart at 00:23 (Monday – Thursday & Sunday) and at 01:30 (Friday and Saturday).

The restructuring of the bus routes in the OSY network

The plan for the restructuring of the transport network that has been formulated by OASA for the interconnection of the municipalities in the areas where the new metro stations “Maniatika”, “Piraeus”, “Municipal Theatre” are located and for the possibility of new transfers, it is based on reinforcements and modifications of bus routes. The reconfiguration of the lines is divided into two phases:

During the first phase, with the start of operation of the three new stations, direct interventions are foreseen, which will be evaluated after the first period of operation of the stations. Then and in a reasonable period of time, the next phase of redesign will follow which will include additional transport arrangements, which will be required after the complete operation of line 3, following an assessment and evaluation of the established situation in the transport network of the wider area

In more detail, the following interventions have been planned:

  • The bus line 831 Aigaleo-Piraeus is reinforced with additional routes throughout the day.
  • Bus line 810 Schistos-Korydallos is being modified into a feeder line for the “Korydallos” metro station and will connect with Petrou Ralli avenue.
  • Bus line 830 Agia Varvara-Piraeus is being modified into a feeder line for the “Korydallos” metro station.
  • Bus line 846 Neapolis-Nicaea-Piraeus is being modified into a feeder line for the “Nicaea” metro station.
  • Bus line 900, which was created in the last 2 years to cover the transition period between the operation of the metro stations “Korydallos” and “Nikaia” and the 3 new stations of “Piraeus”, is being abolished.

The starting points and ending points of the existing bus lines remain as they are.
