Firewood prices skyrocket – Significant shortages in Northern Greece

by

This winter is expected to be particularly difficult due to the energy crisis as the prices of wood and heating oil have skyrocketed.

In mountainous Greek villages, residents have already lit their stoves as the temperature has even reached 0 degrees Celsius. However, the wood they have bought at an increased price is likely not to arrive which increases their concern about how they will make it through the coming winter.

“So far I have given 1,400 euros for the wood but I don’t know if it will arrive. I got them at the end of August. Initially he gave me 140 to 150 euros and then he gave them 180 euros” said a resident from Drama Fort speaking to SKAI.

“We light almost a month stoves everything we can burn, pellets although these are expensive, it has reached 600 euros per pallet, it doesn’t suit. We are looking to turn it into wood,” says another resident from Kato Nevrokopi.

Wood prices are soaring

Wood prices compared to last year have skyrocketed. Last year, a ton of oak in a local pen cost 120-130 euros, in contrast to this year, when its price has risen significantly, reaching 180-200 euros plus VAT.

At the same time, the quantities that will be given this year by the Forestry Department are not enough, due to important issues wood shortages resulting in residents looking for other ways to keep warm.
