Scientists from the US and Mexico have collected evidence that the impact of the large asteroid that led, among other things, to the extinction of almost all dinosaurs, caused a “mega-earthquake” that lasted for weeks or even months.
The asteroid, named Chicxulub and about ten kilometers in diameter, fell 66 million years ago in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, opening a crater 180 to 200 kilometers in diameter.
The researchers, led by Herman Bermudez of the University of Montclair in New Jersey, who will make an announcement at a conference in Geological Society of America on Sunday, they estimate that the asteroid’s impact rocked our planet with a massive aftershock that released about 50,000 times more energy than the 9.1-magnitude Sumatra earthquake in 2004.
A few days ago, other scientists announced the findings of their modeling study, according to which the impact of the asteroid created a global tsunami with an initial height of 1,500 meters. And the new study found evidence of the creation of a tsunami with a huge wave.
