“There went the killer… they all stepped aside. He hugged Paul and stabbed him.” Magda Fyssa describes in her testimony the night when “the earth opened under her feet”, when her son fell dead from the knife of Giorgos Roupakias.

“Three professional strikes. Two in the heart and one in the thigh, in the aorta. The one who did it was trained, the doctor also told us,” said the witness.

Inside a packed hall, on the side of the audience reserved for Pavlos Fyssa’s friends and anti-fascists and almost empty on the Golden Dawn side, Pavlos Fyssa’s mother began to testify about the murder of her child, stressing that at the expense of of the musician the order of Nice was moved.

“Obviously he was a target,” said the witness, pointing out that Pavlos was known for his anti-fascist music.

“My name is Magda and Pavlos is my son” were the first words she said.

With most of the seats on the bench behind her, since only Yiannis Lagos and two other defendants are present, Ms. Fyssa avoids saying the name of the absent Giorgos Roupakias, calling him sentenced to life in prison “the murderer”.

The witness described what she knows happened on the evening of September 18, 2013, when her son went with his partner, Chrysa, and his friends to the Coralli cafe to watch a football match. There, as the musician’s mother said, were two people dressed in Golden Dawn clothing, with camouflage pants and the organization’s T-shirt inside out so that its insignia could not be seen.

“After the ball is over, they go to leave and see that the two guys have gone out and five people with bad intentions have gathered across the street. Pavlos said ‘let’s go and we’ll come later for the cars’. Arriving in Tsaldari and Kefallinia, they see a whole convoy mainly with machines.

The car at the beginning is the killer’s. He stops and asks Pavlos who Kefallinias is and Pavlos tells him she is. They have already gathered from the 5 people who were at the beginning, over 30-40, I don’t know exactly how many and DIAS has also come, already two machines outside the shop. The engines of DIAS then become four in Tsaldari”.

As Ms. Fyssa said, it was clear that those gathered wanted to terrorize and escalate the tension: “So, the battalion starts swearing. They were holding clubs, crowbars, they have come to terrorize. The kids decide to go across the street and go home after getting cigarettes. Those from there start cursing loudly, pounding their feet down rhythmically.

Paul said to his friends: ‘Now we run’. The children ran. But Pavlos did not run. He fell behind and they caught up with him. They start passing by 3 or 5 times, hitting and running away, cursing, as a result of which they trap Pavlos there. The battle began with the Chrysaugians striking.. they failed to bring him down.

The assassin was not wearing the Golden Dawn uniform and was older than the others. He was in a cool state with calm movements when he left the car and went to the scene. Everyone then steps aside.. he gets in between, hugs Pavlos and stabs him.”

According to Magda Fyssa, Pavlos’ friend told her that she was begging the police to go to Pavlos, at the point where the attack was taking place…

“They said they couldn’t. Someone was finally moved and followed her. Arriving, the murder had taken place and instead of arresting the murderer, they handcuffed Pavlos who lifted his shirt and said ‘He stabbed me, will you arrest me on top of that?’. And he showed his killer. A policewoman then said: ‘We said no to knives!’ which means they knew beforehand’.

The witness described at the beginning of her testimony the moments that followed, when she saw Pavlos’ father trying to tell her that something serious had happened and that they should go to the hospital.

“I realized that something serious had happened. How bad I didn’t know…”

With a broken voice, she referred to what happened at the General State Hospital of Nice until she saw her child in the morgue. “He didn’t seem scared or distressed. He was calm, he was sleeping…”

Earlier, before the testimony of Magdas Fyssa began, the side of Ioannis Lagos, the only one present from the considered management group of the criminal organization, raised the issue of publicity of the trial, asking for radio and television coverage of the meetings “and with our own media… as the media is controlled by the other side.”

The petition was signed by some of the defendants, including the absent Giorgos Roupakias, the former MPs Ilias Panagiotaros and Christos Pappas as well as the “core leader” of Golden Dawn in Perama, Giorgos Pantazis.

The request was opposed by the leader of Golden Dawn, Nikos Michaloliakos, his wife, Eleni Zaroulia, as well as Ilias Kasidiaris, Stathis Boukouras, Giorgos Germenis and Chrysovalantis Alexopoulos.

The court, with a similar prosecutorial proposal, rejected the request.
