At least 19 climbers dead in latest Himalayan avalanche accident
An avalanche swept away a group of 41 people at an altitude of 4,880 meters in Uttarakhand state on Tuesday while ten people are still missing.
The team consisted of 34 apprentice mountaineers studying at a local mountaineering club, the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, 7 instructors and a nurse.
Among the dead is the experienced mountaineer Savita Kanswal, a member of the group’s teachers.
Earlier this year, she had conquered Everest and neighboring Makulu in just 16 days, setting a record for women.

“19 bodies were found. Ten people are still missing,” national disaster agency spokesman Ridhim Agarwal told AFP as bad weather hampered the rescue operation.
Agarwal said the climbers were trapped in a ravine shortly after the avalanche.
Two military helicopters have been sent to the area to help with the search, according to a disaster management official.
