“It was an unorthodox way, but it saved many lives,” he told ERT’s envoy to Kythira, Alexandros Kalafatis. “90 people were piled up in a loft on the rocks. We managed and got eighty. If we had delayed a little longer, because the waves were too big, more people would have been lost,” said Mr. Protopsaltis, who managed to rescue the migrants who were struggling from the steep rocks with the forklift truck he has.

“We lowered a sack and in this way we saved them. The authorities of the island and the inhabitants of the island saved this whole world. This should be known to all. Eighty people were saved,” he added. “I saw people getting lost, falling off the cliff and drowning,” said the eyewitness, describing the desperate efforts of the wreckers.

In the afternoon hours today, Friday, the departure of the migrants of Kapsali who arrived irregularly on the island in the early hours of last Sunday is expected.
