Shipwreck in Lesvos: Condolences of FRONTEX for the dead migrants

I would also like to thank the brave professionals who put their lives on the line to save the many women, children and men in danger,” said Ayya Kalnaya, Executive Director of FRONTEX in an announcement about the wrecks “Opens of Lesvos”.

“In the early hours of Thursday, October 6, the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) began a search and rescue operation in the Aegean under difficult weather conditions. A Latvian plane and three Portuguese rescue divers who took part in the Frontex operation in Greece helped the Greek authorities in locating the missing people,” says the FRONTEX statement.

He notes that “89 people have been rescued at sea, while 16 people have been pulled to land. Those requiring medical attention have been taken to a hospital. Unfortunately, 18 lives have been lost.”
