We are pleased to finally welcome the Metro to Piraeus.

We hope that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Minister Kostas Karamanlis as well as their well-oiled communication mechanism,

not to ridicule this historic day for Piraeus,

with silly self-affirmation fiestas, as they are wont to do.

We are proud of the decisive and effective contribution

of the SYRIZA Government in this great project

“With special satisfaction, together with the women and men of Piraeus, we too finally welcome METRO to Piraeus. In Maniatika, at the large port, at the Municipal Theatre.

The new Line 3 of the Metro, which connects Piraeus with Nice, Korydallos, Agia Varvara, Aigaleo and with many stations in Athens with the final destination at Athens Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”, opens a completely new chapter in the service of residents and visitors of Piraeus and their daily needs, in combination with ISAP, the Suburban and the Tram. They also open new avenues for sustainable development.

We remind and are therefore particularly satisfied that the SYRIZA Government unhooked the project in 2015, put an end to the quagmire and stagnation, and effectively accelerated its progress and development. He completed the three stations of Nikaia, Korydallos, Agia Varvara and all the tunnels while at the same time providing solutions to chronic problems, which allowed the progress and completion of the project. Let’s remember that in 2015 the construction had stopped, a series of critical decisions such as the definitive location of the Piraeus station and critical facilities had not been determined, the usual practice of right-wing governments to carry out projects without implementation studies brought new problems at every stage even in the direction of the tunnel. The debts of the Greek State and the tragic consequences of the then legislation of the Samaras government which did not allow the offsetting of VAT, had brought METRO Piraeus close to the complete dissolution of the Convention.

Great satisfaction, however, does not give us the right to forget what was not done or was not done correctly. Some of us, men and women of Piraeus, together with other active citizens, for more than twenty years now, have consistently claimed and are still claiming a complete and well-thought-out network of Fixed Orbit Media for the wider area of Piraeus. Piraiki, Hatzikyriakeio, Gallipoli, Freattyda, Metaxa and Tzanio Hospitals, were left out of the plan mainly due to the restrictions of the then governments of the ND. Drapetsona, Keratsini, Perama, as well, while the 2006 plans provided for the extension of the Metro there as well.

The design of the Tram axes was changed arbitrarily and in a coup d’état, with the intervention of persons and entities unrelated to traffic planning, with the result that the Tram in Piraeus operates today, with specifications far below the needs of the citizens.

Also, the lack of planning by the current Government brings the Metro to Piraeus, but reduces the routes to “Eleftherios Venizelos”, as it was not planned to have purchased the necessary additional trains for the extension of Line 3!!

Finally, we hope that as of today there is no longer any excuse for the huge delays in drawing up a complete and modern Traffic-Circulation Study, which will solve the traffic confusion, but also a complete and coherent Controlled Parking Study, both studies for the whole of Piraeus.

Nevertheless, this day is historic and we hope that it will not be degraded and ridiculed by fiestas of stupid governmental fictitious self-affirmation by Minister Kostas Karamanlis, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and their well-oiled communication apparatus.

We will be there, present and present at the opening, with the satisfaction we feel, with the self-confidence for our effective contribution as a Government and with our criticism and our proposals for what was not done as it should have been in the past and for what we owe to the citizens as a State to redesign from here on out, for the wider area of Piraeus. We hope that the Prime Minister and the Government will not insult the dignity, memory, judgment and needs of citizens.”
