In his apology, the perpetrator denied raping his 70-year-old sister-in-law, since, as he said, she “voluntarily went to his house and they had dinner”

The 65-year-old pensioner, who repeatedly raped his 70-year-old sister-in-law, in the village of Tritaia, was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday by the Mixed Jury Court of Aigio.

During the hearing, the victim – who could not afford to hire a lawyer – testified that she “witnessed” at the hands of the perpetrator for two whole years, from 2016 to 2018. As she reported, he was rushed 5-6 times month and there were incidents where when she resisted, the perpetrator threatened her with a saw and other objects to make her succumb to his sexual desires.

The rapes took place, according to her testimony, “at the 65-year-old’s house but also in fields and under a… pear tree, where they covered my mouth so that my voices could not be heard when I called for help.”

In another part of her testimony, the sister-in-law claimed that the climax of the threats was the offender’s statement that if she says the slightest thing, he will hang her from the plane tree. And he concluded: “I was living a drama and I was afraid to denounce him, but I finally found the strength with the support of two or three people close to me, to whom I revealed what I was doing.”

What the victim testified was confirmed by her nephew who was a prosecution witness.

For his part, the perpetrator in his apology denied that he raped his sister-in-law, since as he said “she voluntarily went to his house and they had dinner”. He also claimed that he was annoyed by his sister-in-law because he had lent her 400 euros, which he used to buy a donkey and asked her to pay him back. Two brothers of the perpetrator appeared as defense witnesses, who emphasized that the plaintiff staged the rapes for reasons of revenge.

The three regular judges and one jury voted to convict the 65-year-old, while three jurors dissented. The convicted pensioner appealed and was released.
