Ben Thouard – a photographer living in French Polynesia who captured on camera a brave, lone surfer battling one of the heaviest waves in the world – has won first prize in the Ocean Photographer of the 2022 competition Year).

The wave is known as Teahupo’o, or ‘skull place’ and the click captured the moment the surfer is caught in the wave’s terrifying maelstrom.

The competition showcases photographic snapshots of either the beauty of the seas or the threats facing the oceans and the creatures that live in them

Thouard’s entry was selected from among thousands of nominations, but was unanimously voted the winner by the jury.

Second place went to Katherine Lu, for her nighttime photo of a rare and impressive multi-year-old blanket octopus swimming in black waters in the Philippines. “I was very sick during this dive but I was compensated,” said the photographer.

Brook Peterson took third place with his photo of a cormorant among a school of fish below an oil rig off Los Angeles in the US. The whole forms the shape of a human face.

The competition was organized by Oceanographic Magazine in support of the environmental protection organization SeaLegacy in partnership with Princess Yachts.
