There may be no right to a suspended sentence for certain crimes, the Minister of the Interior emphasized to SKAI Makis Voridis in the shadow of the heinous case of the rape of the 12-year-old girl.

“Two issues are raised here: should we not have the right to parole at all for certain crimes, and the second is that we need to strengthen the correctional services that evaluate their progress inside the prison” he emphasized, while regarding the abolition of the right to parole he replied that “of course and may enter’ (ordinance).

The government created the framework and an evaluation is done, the judge decides, while the process before was done automatically, the Minister of the Interior emphasized.

“The issue is not whether the framework is strict. It is strict. All offenses against minors that violate sexual freedom and dignity are criminal in nature and in some cases the penalty is life imprisonment. The problem lies in the suspensions. The suspension system was almost standard. Now the prisoner’s personality is weighed and evaluated,” he explained.

“It is a miserable perversion, it is not easy to form a profile of a pedophile, it is not that they are rich, poor, educated or less educated etc (…) this is also a great difficulty in handling the cases” noted Makis Voridis.
