Children who have lived for years in an institutional environment, without being able to integrate into the community, today find a more personalized support through the Supported Living Homes
Children with disabilities, who until recently lived in the annex for the disabled in Lechain (formerly KEPEP), now have the opportunity to live their lives with dignity and respect and in suitable conditions, following the successful operation of the Deinstitutionalization program implemented by the Social Welfare Center of the Region Of Western Greece.
Children who have lived for years in an institutional environment, without being able to integrate into the community, today find a more personalized support through the Supported Living Homes in the area of Varda, in the municipality of Andravida – Kyllini.
In the two SYDs that are already operating, eight of the total 41 children of the Lechaina branch for disabled people are accommodated. The appropriate staff has been hired in them and is constantly being trained in order to offer the right services to the people staying there.
The president of the Center for Social Welfare, Nikos Stathakopoulos, stated that the Shelters that will henceforth host the children of the disabled branch of Lechaina (formerly KEPEP) will be a total of six, five of them are located in Varda and one will operate in Lechaina.
Out of the total of 41 children who currently live in the former KEPEP, 24 will be accommodated in the Varda and Lechaina SYDs while the remaining 17 will be absorbed by the Deinstitutionalization program also operated by the Social Welfare Center of the Attica Region so that they can be closer to their relatives.
The 4th and 5th SYD in Varda are already ready for use, accommodating eight children – one in each house (each SYD includes four houses – independent of each other), while in about a month the 3rd Shelter in Varda is expected to be operational with four still houses.
The 1st SYD which will be located in Lechina in the next period will accommodate four children while the houses for the 2nd and 6th SYD have already been identified which will also operate in Varda and will accommodate 8 more PWDs.
It should be noted that the transition of People with Special Needs to the Supported Living Homes will take place gradually in the next period as soon as the staff training procedures are completed and the homes are ready for use.
The Supported Living Shelters
The SYDs created through the European Program meet all the required accessibility and accommodation standards, thus ensuring the right of individuals to access, safety and privacy.
They are staffed with appropriately trained and numerically sufficient staff so that human-centered personalized support is provided, the person lives in an environment adapted to their special characteristics, with absolute respect for their rights, and equal access of disabled people to local community services is ensured ( daily activities, training, etc.) and the tenants have the possibility to follow individual programs that will ensure the development of their potential according to their personal wishes and their level of functionality.
