A 57-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment, who sat on the bench of the Mixed Jury Court of Thessaloniki, accused of killing his 55-year-old estranged wife, shooting her in the back three times with a hunting rifle.

The crime was committed last year in December, in Nea Madyto, Thessaloniki, in a bakery-confectionery, where the unfortunate woman ran to save herself from the gunman who pursued her, insistently asking for their reunion and her return to their home.

The Court unanimously found him guilty of manslaughter in a calm state of mind, illegal carrying of a weapon and use of a weapon, without recognizing any mitigating circumstances.

According to the case file, the couple had been living apart since 2017, after 35 years of marriage, during which time they had four children and grandchildren. The 55-year-old reportedly entered into a new relationship and as the perpetrator was putting pressure on them with threats to get back together, she moved from Kipaki Trikalon, where they lived in a Roma settlement, to Nea Madyto, staying with her brother.

He had contacted the police

Regarding the threats he allegedly received, he had turned to the police, expressing fear for her life, as described in the indictment, while a few months before the murder, the 57-year-old allegedly told a relative of the deceased that he would kill “if not arrange for her return.”

As described in the same case file, the perpetrator, after being informed by a friend about the place where the 55-year-old now lives, went and found her. “He followed her and as she left the house he followed her in the car. He asked to enter the vehicle but she was scared and ran into the bread and pastry workshop securing the glass door […] with the perpetrator shooting her in the back and from a close range three times”, as stated in the indictment. The woman succumbed to her serious injuries in the ambulance en route to Hippocrates Hospital.

The suspicions of EL.AS. they turned from the first moment to the face of the 57-year-old whose involvement was identified by the area’s security cameras. A few hours earlier, he was spotted sleeping in his car in the Roma settlement of Agia Sofia Diavaton and after confessing his act, he indicated to the Homicide Department police officers the place where he had hidden the deadly weapon (among bushes in the Kalochori area).

“I loved her…”

“I loved her, it is a lie that I had threatened her. I just wanted to scare her. I told her “let’s get together, we have children and grandchildren”. He replied that the children are not mine. That’s where I got confused,” he said during his apology. In addition to the life sentence, the Court imposed an additional 4.5 years in prison, and after the verdict he returned to prison.
