Crete: How the drug trafficking ring worked – The “hard core” and the leader who gave orders from prison

A total of 11 people were arrested and a further 12 are charged, bringing the total to 23 involved.

During a press conference, the Police Director of Heraklion, Brigadier General Nikos Spyridakis and the Commander of the Heraklion Security Sub-Directorate Giorgos Vardakis mentioned the way in which the drug trafficking ring operated, which the police authorities uncovered yesterday.

As it was said, the “hard core” consisted of five people, while the leader of the group is incarcerated in the Chania detention center and was the man who gave the orders. Four people were active in the cultivation, but also the trafficking of raw cannabis, in Rethymno, Heraklion, Lasithi. As Mr. Vardakis mentioned, a total of 11 people were arrested and another 12 are accused, with the number rising to a total of 23 involved.

As pointed out, this particular case is one of the most important cases for the police as “the whole body was investigated, from cultivation to trafficking” underlined the Commander of the Heraklion Security Sub-Directorate, with the Police Director, Brigadier General Nikos Spyridakis, explaining that it is for a police success, while congratulating those involved in the operations.

“This gives us more strength and tenacity to continue,” added Mr. Spyridakis.

How did they act?

As it emerged from the police investigation and the appropriate evaluation of evidence, the group in question was cultivating cannabis seedlings, harvesting and storing them and then supplying quantities of cannabis for their further trafficking, obtaining an illegal financial benefit.

More specifically, a leading role was played by a 44-year-old citizen incarcerated in a Detention Center, who provided information and instructions regarding the cultivation of cannabis seedlings and its channeling to key suppliers. An important role in the group was played by a 32-year-old citizen-arrested who was in charge of growing the seedlings, harvesting and guarding them. The rest of the team members had separate roles, proceeding on a case-by-case basis with the cultivation of the seedlings, providing appropriate equipment and further communicating about their availability and distribution to buyers for a sum of money.

After coordinated actions and targeted actions, on October 11, a police operation was organized by the Narcotics Prosecution Department of the Security Directorate of Heraklion and carried out in areas of the Regional Units of Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi, with the participation of TEKAM Crete police officers, the Crime Prevention and Suppression Team (OPKE) of Heraklion, the Police Operations Departments of Heraklion, Rethymno & Mylopotamos, the Security Department of Ierapetra and the Police Operations Department of Sitia.

During the operation, a plantation consisting of thirty (30) cannabis seedlings was located in a rural area of ​​the Municipality of Mylopotamos, which were uprooted and confiscated.

In addition, searches were carried out in the houses and other premises owned and used by the arrested persons, where the following were found and confiscated:

  • 587 grams of cannabis,
  • 1 magazine pistol,
  • 4 precision scales,
  • 53 cartridges,
  • the sum of 850 euros as proceeds from illegal activities,
  • iron fist,
  • metal globe,
  • knife,
  • 3 flares,
  • 66 firecrackers,
  • 12 mobile phones and more (SIM cards, charger and bluetooth device)
  • notebook with handwritten notes of names and sums of money
  • 3 cars were seized, which were used to facilitate drug trafficking and the cultivation of cannabis seedlings.

The preliminary investigation is carried out by the Narcotics Prosecution Department of the Heraklion Security Sub-Directorate, while those arrested with the case filed against them will be taken to the competent Prosecutor.
