Civil Protection: Meeting in anticipation of bad weather – Activate 112 if deemed necessary

The weather will deteriorate from the night of Thursday (13/10) until the morning hours of Sunday (16/10) in western and southern Greece

A meeting was held today at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection under the general secretary of Civil Protection, Vasilios Papageorgiou, for the optimal coordination of all the relevant agencies and the best response to the consequences of the bad weather that is expected to affect several regions of the country starting this evening.

During the meeting, the general secretary of Civil Protection emphasized to all participants the need for increased preparedness and full vigilance, so that any problems due to the heavy rains and storms that are expected to occur are immediately dealt with. In this context, 112 will be activated, if deemed necessary to send warning messages to residents, depending on the course of the phenomena.

The meeting was attended by deputy regional governors and coordinators of Civil Protection from the regions of the Ionian Islands, Epirus and Western Greece, representatives of the Central Union of Municipalities and Communities (KEDE), as well as the regional coordinators of the Fire Brigade of the respective regions.

It is recalled that according to the Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin issued today, Thursday, October 13, 2022 by the National Meteorological Service (EMS), the weather will worsen from the night of Thursday (13-10-2022) until the morning hours of Sunday ( 16-10-2022) in western and southern Greece with heavy rains and storms that will be accompanied by a high frequency of lightning, hail and temporarily, during the phenomena, by strong winds.

From today Thursday night (13-10-2022) and until the evening of Friday (14-10-2022) heavy rains and storms are predicted in the Ionian Islands, Epirus and western Sterea.

Tomorrow Friday (14-10-2022) the strong phenomena will affect, from the early morning the western Peloponnese, from noon the eastern Peloponnese and gradually from the afternoon the western Cyclades. At times the rainfall will be heavy in the southern parts of Thessaly and central Sterea.

On Saturday (15-10-2022) heavy rains and storms are predicted in the western and southern Cyclades and Crete. In the afternoon, the phenomena in the Cyclades will weaken, but will continue in Crete, while they will also affect the Dodecanese in places. In Crete and the Dodecanese, a weakening of the phenomena is expected in the morning hours of Sunday (16-10-2022).

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr) of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, has informed the competent government agencies involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, so that they are on increased civil protection readiness, in order to face directly the effects of the occurrence of intense weather phenomena.

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection recommends that citizens be particularly careful, taking measures to protect themselves from risks arising from the occurrence of severe weather phenomena.
