Alexandros Nikolaidis: The Olympian with the “golden” heart and political concerns is no longer with us

He was born in Thessaloniki on October 17, 1979. In 1982, just 3 years old, he did his first training in Tae Kwon Do, in his father’s Association “Alexander the Great”.

In 1996, he won his first gold medal in the pan-European and a few months later in the world junior championship. In 1997 he won the gold medal in the European Junior Championships.

In 2000 he made his debut at the Sydney Olympic Games, where in the second race, he had the great misfortune: he broke his leg.

In the summer of 2004 at the Olympic games in Athens, he won his first silver Olympic medal, while in 2008 he won the gold at the pan-European championship in Rome and became the first torchbearer in the flame-lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia.

In the same year he won his second silver medal at the Beijing Olympic Games and was voted by Greek journalists as athlete of the year. In 2012 he was the flag bearer of the Greek delegation at the Olympic Games in London.

Alexandros Nikolaidis graduated from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences of the AUTH and was an officer of the Fire Department. He was married to the journalist Dora Tsambazis and the father of Philippos and Eleanna.

The Olympian walked politically through the lines of SYRIZA. In March 2019, his candidacy with the party in the 2019 European elections was announced and in September 2020 he took up the duties of deputy representative.

He had personal contact and friendship with Alexis Tsipras.
