The minister gave clarifications on the movements of soldiers in response to a relevant question from a member of parliament

The Military Service remains at the disposal of dismissed soldiers to provide assistance, in case it is requested, regarding the facilitation of an emergency movement problem. This was stated, among other things, by the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, in response to a question submitted by MeRA25 MP Angeliki Adamopoulou on the subject of “Abandoned discharged soldiers on the island of Kos”.

As the minister explained, “the General Staffs cover the movement needs of military personnel, in accordance with the legislative framework that governs them”. “Conscript soldiers who are dismissed are granted boarding status by the units – independent sub-units, for their final place of residence,” he added.

“Conscript soldiers, and in this case those who serve on the islands, know the date of their discharge and pre-book tickets, based on their wishes and existing availability,” noted Mr. Panagiotopoulos.

“On the day of their dismissal“, he continued, “the soldiers are given the slip of the special way sheet, the boarding status and the Police Identity Card and they are transported in Military Service vehicles to the port of departure”.

“After the date of their dismissal, the Military Service has no authority to interfere with the decisions and actions of the dismissed soldiers, regarding their means of transportation, the time of their departure from the island to their home or their further stay on the island departure”, explained the Minister of National Defense.

Regarding the event described to the relevant questionthe Military Service, as the minister emphasized, “was never informed by a soldier under dismissal or dismissed, that he was unable to pre-book a ticket or issue a ticket with the granted boarding status, in order to provide the relevant care mentioned above”.

“On an annual basis is granted a significant number of boarding situations for dismissed conscripts, who move to the mainland or to another island, and to date no difficulty has been reported regarding the movement of decommitted conscripts to their final place of residence, in order for the Military Service to intervene to provision of any facilities”, Mr. Panagiotopoulos concluded in his answer.
