Repeated meetings are held at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection for the best coordination of all relevant bodies in view of the bad weather that has started to hit the country yesterday, while, in the context of more effective coordination of the Civil Protection forces, it was decided to in all the Regional Units that are expected to be affected by the bad weather.
Yesterday, Thursday, December 9, a meeting was held under the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, in which they discussed extensively problems that may occur in the area of ​​Messolonghi. According to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in a statement, during the meeting, “targeted local interventions to avoid floods” were decided, while similar issues concerning the wider areas of Etoloakarnania and Achaia were also discussed. At the same time, an overall assessment was made of the danger of specific points where, due to defects, there is a possibility of flooding. In this context, local interventions were decided.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Evangelos Tournas, the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou, the Governor of Western Greece, Nektarios Farmakis, the Mayor of Messolonghi, Konstantinos Lyros, and the technical services of the Hellenic Technical Service.
A new meeting will be held today, Friday 10 December, in the afternoon, to assess the situation, with the participation of the political leadership of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, as well as the governors of Western Greece, Peloponnese, Epirus and Ionian Islands for better preparation mechanism to deal with any problems from bad weather. The political leadership of the ministry will also be briefed by the director of the National Meteorological Service (EMY), Theodoros Kolydas, on the course of the phenomena, while the meeting will be attended by the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Lieutenant General Stefanos Kolokouris and Lt. Gen. Police Eleftherios Garilas.
It is noted that in the Unified Coordination Centers that will operate in the Regional Units that are expected to be affected by the bad weather will participate the Fire Brigade, the Greek Police, the Local Government and all the involved bodies. As the ministry emphasizes, “the operation of these centers had been tested in the bad weather” Ballos “and was considered very efficient”.
At the same time, the ministry, following the relevant forecasts, calls on the citizens to be especially careful and to faithfully follow the following basic instructions:
– Avoid any unnecessary movement during severe weather conditions and secure your doors and windows tightly, always keeping in mind in case of torrents to move to the highest points of the house.
– Do not cross torrents, streams or flooded roads, on foot or by car, for any reason, if you are in this position. For no reason.
It is reminded that, according to the Extraordinary Weather Deterioration Bulletin issued yesterday by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the weather will worsen from Thursday night (9-12-2021) until Sunday morning (12-12 -2021), with main characteristics the heavy rains and storms and the very strong to stormy winds.
They will be affected in detail by heavy rains and thunderstorms:
A. From the evening of Thursday (9-12-2021) until the afternoon of Friday (10-12-2021): The Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Sterea and Western Peloponnese.
B. On Friday (10-12-2021):
1. By noon: The aforementioned regions and Western, Central Macedonia gradually Eastern Macedonia, the islands of North and East Aegean, Thessaly, Central Sterea, Sporades, Evia, Eastern Peloponnese and eastern Solids.
2. Thrace until late in the afternoon.
3. From noon until late at night the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese.
4. Until late in the afternoon temporarily the Cyclades and Western Crete.
C. Stormy south winds will blow in the seas with an intensity of 7 to 8 beauforts and on Friday (10-12-2012) in the Aegean will reach 9 beauforts locally.
D. From the night hours of Friday (10-12-2021) a new wave of bad weather will affect the whole country from the west with heavy rains and thunderstorms, as well as snowfall in the northern continents. The Ionian, the mainland, the islands of the North and East Aegean, Evia, the Cyclades, and possibly temporarily the northern parts of the Dodecanese will be initially affected. The intense phenomena on Saturday (11-12-2021) will affect Attica as well.
