“It is obvious that from the Turkish side they were beaten, stripped and pushed towards Greece” said Mr. Chrysovalantis Gialamas
“We have been in this profession for over 20 years and what we discuss with our colleagues is that we have never seen something so inhumane, degrading and shameful.”
With these words the president of the Evros Border Guards, Mr. Chrysovalantis Gialamas describes to ThessToday.gr the tragic picture that his colleagues saw on Friday morning, when they found 92 migrants in the area south of the Feron bridgehead.
In particular, shortly before 09:00 in the morning at this particular spot, 92 migrants who had been abandoned naked, with strong signs of abuse on their bodies, were rescued by police officers of the Border Guard Department, in collaboration with Frontex, without the need for anyone to be taken to a hospital and in a poor psychological state. “I have never seen anything like this before. It was beyond humiliating for some to handle people in this way. It is obvious that from the Turkish side they beat them, stripped them and pushed them towards Greece”.
It is noted that the investigation by Greek police and Frontex officials found that they were pushed into Greek territory, in plastic boats from Turkey to Greece through the river Evros. Most of them are Afghans, while some come from Syria and Pakistan.
All the clothing-feeding and first aid needs of the above persons were immediately covered by the Greek Authorities. The immigrants are in the Police Department for Safeguarding Goods and will then be transferred to the Police Station of Phylaki for their identification.
