The sea foamed in Agia Pelagia, Crete, where Saturday’s bad weather killed two people and caused massive damage to vehicles and shops

Extensive white foams, which in combination with the large amounts of mud in places turn brown, have made their appearance on the coasts of Crete.

The Director of Research of ELKETHE, Dr. Stella Psarras speaking to cretalive.gr he explains how it is the result of the huge amount of rain which due to the bad weather fell in the previous days in Crete, creating tons of mud that ended up in the sea, transporting there transportable materials including large amounts of nutrients. Most likely the nutrients caused some intense growth of planktonic microorganisms, which, as products of their metabolism, release into the marine environment polysaccharides, proteins and other organic components which, by stirring and undulating, cause the foaming phenomenon (analogous to meringue, when we beat the egg white which is protein).

According to her, it is not something dangerous or toxic. But to say anything with certainty will require sampling and analysis. ELKETHE has many times pointed out and proposed to the Region of Crete the need to set up a coastal monitoring network, which unfortunately has not been carried out, despite the relevant announcements from the Region of Crete.

“I have never seen it in Crete, it reminds me of images of much “richer” seas in N. Europe or the phenomenon observed last year on the coasts of the Sea of Marmara that reached the N.E. with the currents. Aegean, it makes a terrible impression on me and it is interesting to have a sample”, says the ELKETHE scientist.
