All the Hagia Sophia temples that exist in the world, from Istanbul to China

by

The history of 37 historic iconic temples dedicated to the Wisdom of God, located in 11 countries, is presented in one volume.

At the end of the 19th century, in China, Russian engineers and laborers created on the wild Manchurian steppe the city of Harbin to live in until the construction of the Chinese railway was completed. Deeply religious, they could not help but build a church, which they named Agia Sophia.

This church, in the course of history, first experienced desolation, then savage desecration during the years of Mao’s “Cultural Revolution”, before finally regaining its former glory in the 1980s, under Deng Xiaoping, when it was placed under the protection of the Chinese state and was included in the list of first-class monuments of the People’s Republic of China.

In the same Russia, another Hagia Sophia, that of Pushechny Dvor, Moscow, which existed from 1480 AD. it went through its own tribulations – including in the early 1930s, when it came under Stalin’s jurisdiction and was converted into an experimental sports uniform factory for the Dynamo team – until it reached redemption in 2000, when the temple was restored and handed over to the Russian Orthodox Church, who transferred him to today’s federal security agency FSB and is operational.

The history of the two temples, together with the history of others 35 historic iconic temples devoted to the Wisdom of God, who are in 11 countries from Scotland to the depths of China and from Cyprus to Saint Petersburg, are included in the volume “Hagia Sophia: The Temples of God’s Wisdom around the World”, which is presented the day after tomorrow, Friday 21 October 2022 at 18:30 in the atrium site of the Museum of Byzantine Culture (address: Stratou Avenue 2), Thessaloniki.

The volume, as mentioned, is an initiative of the International Secretariat of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (D.S.O). as of September 2020, “after the Turkish government’s arbitrary decision to convert the Hagia Sophia of Istanbul and the Chora Monastery into Muslim mosques. A decision that insults Christianity as a whole and endangers the preservation of World Heritage sites, recognized by UNESCO.”

The presentation of the Volume will be made by the General Secretary of the D.S.O., Member of the Hellenic Parliament, dr. Maximos Harakopoulos, the Director of the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki dr. Agathoniki Tsilipakou.

The scientific opinion has been translated into 9 languages (English, Arabic, Bulgarian, Italian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Russian, Serbian) and is being translated into 4 more (Armenian, French, German and Finnish) and is expected to be translated into others.

The aim is to distribute it in as many countries as possible to raise awareness of the international public opinion and the promotion of the spiritual, historical and cultural stock enclosed by the surrounding temples of the Wisdom of God.
