The global climate relay route “Running Out of Time” ends in Greece – Continuation in Cyprus

The journey of the world relay ends today “Running Out of Time» in Greece entering the final stretch to Egypt where the UN Conference on Climate Change COP27 will be held.

Starting from Glasgow, Scotland on September 30, the Running Out of Time world relay arrived in our country on October 24 from Megali Prespa and covered a route of 750 kilometers.

Early this morning he was at the Marathon Dam, where athletes and representatives of the Fire Brigade informed about the environmental and social effects of the fires. Following the marathon route, he arrived at the Panathenaic Stadium, where the baton was changed in the presence of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the Hellenic Paralympic Committee and the Lyceum of Greek Girls.

Next stop was the Acropolis. There, shortly before 3:00 p.m., students from five schools in Athens who participate in the educational programs of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, Ecological Schools, Learning about Forests, and Young Journalists for the Environment, were waiting for the runners. With cardboards and placards in their hands that read slogans such as “Save the Planet, we have no other home”, “Climate change is here”, “Protect my home”, they sent their own message that “the future of the planet is also ours the future”.

The Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Domna Michailidou, who participated in the relay race from the Panathenaic Stadium to the Acropolis, spoke about an international effort aimed at alerting and awakening all of us to issues related to the environment.

At the Acropolis were also fifth grade students of the 8th elementary school of New Philadelphia where they participate in climate action and climate schools.

The last stop of the “Running Out of Time” world relay journey in Greece is the Flisvos Marina.

The runners of the 7 km route waited in front of the Herodeion in Dionysiou Areopagitou until the participants who came from the Panathenaic Stadium handed over the baton to them. Arriving at the Floisvos Marina, political leadership, ambassadors, Olympic medalist sailors, and a crowd of the public will hand over the baton to the sailing vessel AKRON AOTON, which will transport it to Cyprus, accompanied by the Director of FEE, Daniel Schaffe.

In Greece, the organization is coordinated by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature. The relay has already crossed 10 countries, with important stops across the English Channel and the ceremonies at the European Parliament in Brussels and the UNFCCC headquarters in Bonn, Germany.
