This black box of humanity will tell our story when we disappear

by

The Earth Black Box project is a huge steel plant on the remote island of Tasmania, which aims to mark the end of the world as we know it. Solar-powered hard drives will record and maintain a real-time stream of scientific data on climate change, species extinction, environmental pollution and more. The ultimate goal is when a future society discovers the archive, to be able to understand exactly what happened on our planet.

Unless we dramatically change our way of life, climate change and other human-related dangers will cause our civilization to collapse. The Black Box of the Earth will record every step we take towards destruction. Hundreds of planet-related data sets, measurements and interactions will be continuously collected and stored securely for future generations.

The idea is that if the Earth is destroyed by climate change, there should be an indestructible recording device for anyone who survives so that they can learn from mistakes. It is also there to hold leaders accountable, to make sure their inaction is recorded.

The construction of the black box will be completed in early 2022, however the recording systems have already been activated and are undergoing beta tests. Its dimensions are 10x4x3 meters and it is located on the west coast of Tasmania, an area chosen due to its geological and geopolitical stability. It is located on granite and the steel is 7.5 cm thick.

As for who or what the box will discover after a disaster, researchers hope to have the ability to understand key symbols.

We assume that anyone who can access the interior will be able to interpret basic symbols. As with Rosetta Stone, we want to use multiple code formats. We are exploring the possibility of including an electronic sensor inside the box that will be activated by exposure to light, while activating the box if it has been in a long-term state of inactivity due to a disaster.
