Ground forces are continuing today to put out the fire that broke out on October 22 at Mount Papikio in the Prefecture of Rodopi.

The fire is burning a virgin forest of beech and oak for the 18th day at a relatively high altitude, in sloping and inaccessible places on the Greece-Bulgaria border.

So far, at least 11,500 acres have burned, of which 8,500 are in Greek territory, according to ERT data.

According to the data of the Fire Department, 320 firefighters with 31 water vehicles, 20 groups of pedestrian departments operate in the area.

The Greek Army and the Local Government are assisting in the extinguishing with project machinery for the creation of fire zones.

The general secretary of Civil Protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou, has been in Rodopi since Thursday, November 3, and when asked to comment on the limited air means available, he said on “Chronos 87.5fm” radio: “The helicopters were hired until the end of the fire fighting season on October 31, contracts cannot be extended.”

“From there on, all aerial vehicles come from a strain of the six months of the fire fighting season, as there are planned maintenances, breakdowns and not everything is available immediately” he said characteristically.

In the previous days, the flames also spread to the Bulgarian side, with a great mobilization of the Bulgarian fire-fighting forces for its demarcation.
