Departs at 12:00 for I.M. Vatopediou – People are asking for a new extension
Queues reaching up to three hours of waiting have also been created today at the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in Piraeus, where the faithful are eagerly waiting to worship the Agia Zoni tis Panagia, who today at 12:00 will return to the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi Mount Athos.
Agia Zoni was scheduled to stay in Agios Nikolaos until yesterday Sunday, however, the large turnout of people forced the officials to give an extension for today at 12:00.
However, the people are again asking for an extension as there are many who did not have time or did not manage to worship.
It is estimated that around 260,000 people have visited Agia Zoni since November 5, located in Piraeus.
The Holy Belt of Panagia
The quintessential and graceful Girdle of Our Lady, which is located in the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos, is the only relic that has been preserved from her earthly life.
According to the sacred tradition and history of our Church, the Most Holy Theotokos rose three days after she fell asleep and was taken up bodily into the heavens. During her ascension, she gave the Apostle Thomas the Honor of Zoni. And Thomas together with the other Apostles, after they opened the tomb “uh euron the body” of the Virgin. Thus the Sacred Belt is evidence for our Church of the resurrection and ascension of the Virgin with her body in the heavens and with a word of her transmigration.
The Holy Belt was traditionally made by the Virgin Mary herself with camel hair. Empress Zoe, wife of Leo VI the Wise, out of gratitude for her miraculous healing, embroidered the Belt with gold thread, as it survives today. Initially it was kept in Jerusalem and then in Constantinople, where in the 12th century under Manuel I Comnenus (1143-1180) an official celebration of August 31 was established.
In the end, Emperor John V Kantakuzenos (1347-1355), who had a special love for the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi, as evidenced by many relevant testimonies, donated it to it. Since then, the Holy Belt has been kept in the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, in a silver case of recent manufacture which bears the image of the Monastery. In the lower right part of the display, the builder sculpted the figure of the donor Emperor Kantakouzenos and an inscription that refers to his donation to the Monastery.
Innumerable are the miracles that have taken place until today with the Holy Belt. Its value is inestimable, because it is associated with the Virgin Mary. She has the grace and owes to her the miraculous power, which she transmits to the faithful in various ways.
Agia Zoni preserves the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos “without graduation” because it was associated with her person and life and because the saints are spirit bearers not only during their life, but also after their sleep. The same phenomenon is mentioned in the shrouds and semicinths of the Apostles who performed miracles, because they had the grace of the saints who wore them. That is why the Church pays her homage, as well as to the Holy Wood of the Lord’s Cross.
Agia Zoni has the special grace to cure the infertility of childless couples and cancer patients with a ribbon that has been previously blessed and then girdled by infertile women and patients.
