CoE: To continue the works for the Metro in Exarchion Square

The request of local residents was rejected Exarchion pThey asked the Council of State to freeze the decisions by which the projects for the construction of the metro station in the square of the area.

The rejection was made by the President of the E Department of the supreme court, vice-president of the SC Margarita Gortzolidou, who handled the request for the issuance of a temporary order, i.e. a decision of a temporary nature.

The applicants claimed before the Court that they are opposed to the creation of a Metro station in Exarcheion Square, because in their opinion, irreparable damage will be caused, complete destruction of the plant capital and the aesthetic character of the said square will occur, as well as damage and in the socio-economic life of the region.

Also in their application, they had emphasized that the area of ​​Exarchia has a special architectural and cultural character and it is necessary to receive only mild urban planning interventions that do not burden the residential environment of the area.

So far, the Municipality of Athens has filed an intervention in favor of the continuation of the works, while the State Councilor Dimitris Vassiliadis has been appointed as the rapporteur of the case.

The supreme court will deal again with the merits of the case as the decision issued was related to the issuance of a temporary injunction.
