Sociologist Janja, wife of President-elect Lula (PT), visited this Tuesday (15) the Brazilian NGOs’ stand at COP27, the UN climate conference, in Egypt. In the space, she met with singer Fafá de Belém and with Fátima Bezerra (PT), governor of Rio Grande do Norte.
In an informal atmosphere, Janja posed with a sign saying “This is the mixture of Brazil and Egypt”, a reference to the music of the axé group É O Tchan.
On her way to the stand, called the Brazil Climate Action Hub, where mayors were also waiting for her, Janja said she brought a message of “hope” with the new government’s visit to COP27.
Also on Tuesday, the future First Lady will hold a meeting with female leaders. THE Sheet learned that Karen Tanaka, sustainability manager at Ambev, organized the meeting at Janja’s request.
The conversation will involve Brazilian leaders from the Sustainable Women network, which has more than 250 members. One of the leaders is Denise Hills, sustainability executive at Natura, who has worked at Itaú. Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS (Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development), will also participate.
The presence of Lula’s wife at the COP was expected since the morning (local time), but her visit to the pavilion ended up being postponed until hours later, to around 3 pm (10 am in Brasília time).
The booth space and the surrounding corridors were filled with Brazilians. Janja, however, was brief in speaking to the press.
He said he was very happy to participate in the COP for the first time. “I have great expectations. Tomorrow we have two important agendas here,” he said, referring to the speech that Lula should make at the UN and the event in which the PT participates alongside the governors of the Amazon.
“It is very important for us to see Brazil at the center of the world again, with a leading role in the matter of the environment and climate, mainly”, he also stated.
Janja, alongside Lula, arrived at the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where COP27 is taking place, on Monday night (14th; early Tuesday, 15th, in Egypt) aboard a plane belonging to businessman José Seripieri. Junior, founder of Qualicorp and owner of Qsaúde.
Lula will meet this Tuesday (15th) with the special envoy for the climate of the United States, John Kerry. The closed-door meeting should take place later in the day, local time.
According to Lula’s adviser, he will also have a meeting this Tuesday with Xie Zhenhua, China’s climate envoy, and will speak on the phone with the president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. A meeting with Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), president of the Senate, is also among the plans.
The invitation to Lula to participate in COP27 came from the re-elected governor of Pará Helder Barbalho (MDB) and also from President Sisi — accommodation in the resort where the conference is held is the responsibility of the Egyptian government, says the PT’s advisor.
Lula’s official agenda at the conference begins, however, only this Wednesday (16th), with an event alongside the governors of the Amazon, followed by a speech in the UN area. The following day, he meets with representatives of Brazilian civil society and participates in the International Forum of Indigenous Peoples/Peoples Forum on Climate Change.
