Innovative game aimed at connecting cultural sectors such as local recipes, modern products and the history of the place – Created by staff of the Research Laboratory of Interactive Arts, Ionian University in Corfu
Executives of the Interactive Arts Research Laboratory (inArts.eu), located at Department of Sound & Visual Arts in Corfu, created an innovative game with a serious purpose to connect areas of culture such as local recipes, modern products and the history of the place. The game’s website is https://www.brenda.gr/, the game is directly accessible to everyone in its trial version at https://game.brenda.gr/ with Brenda as its central character, which the player helps to uncover the secrets of the place and develop her skills as a chef.
As the designer of the game and the scientific head of the research group, Associate Professor at the Department of Audio & Visual Arts of the Ionian University, Yiannis Deligiannis, stated: “The connection of thematic areas and the exploration of the rich content that each place has is a bet which, in order to win, requires the user of an application to recognize it as accessible, useful, and fun. The use of serious games and gamification processes does not ensure that anyone who participates has fun while implementing the actions that have been planned, a fact that we know very well in our Department that deals with research on this subject. For this reason, we focused on the concept of Ludification, i.e. on the beneficial “cheating” of the user in combination with the above concepts by designing and creating a tourist guide game with multiple features such as a basic scenario, support for exploratory learning, rewards, playful disclosure of information at points of interest with augmented reality, incentives for users to try local recipes and get to know local products and many other features. “
The game environment generously and openly offers information to the user, without restrictions, whether it is of historical interest or tasting. The only limitation here is that the player, in order to keep the recipes in his book forever, must first unlock them by buying their ingredients, a process that is implemented either by trying modern recipes in restaurants, tasting local products or discovering its history place, since all these actions earn virtual coins which he uses for this purpose. Virtual coins are earned by playing the game and helping Brenda grow her experience. This playful approach is a prerequisite for generation Z, which is not used to “buying” information but to earn it with its value and abilities.
The game was developed as part of the RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE Action project and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union and national resources through the EP. Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation (EPANEK) (project code: T1EDK-05099). The Kilkis Chamber participates as the host of the project and management responsible, the company Honeybee Productions that produced the audio-visual content and the company Arlise with the object of marketing. Visitors to Philoxenia 2022 in Thessaloniki will have the opportunity between 18-20 November to use the functional demo, meet the contributors and discuss their own ideas and ways in which the creative team of the interactive arts research laboratory inArts and their partners they can turn them into playful experiences and environments.
