Sadio Mane, Senegal star, out of World Cup

by

The Senegalese national team announced this Thursday afternoon (17) that Bayern Munich striker Sadio Mané is out of the World Cup. He has not recovered from the injury he had before the tournament.

According to the team’s doctor, the player will need to undergo surgery on his right leg.

The 30-year-old striker was included last week in Senegal’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, which starts on Sunday, despite suffering a fibula injury while playing for Bayern.

The team already believed that he would not be able to be part of the debut, next Monday (21), against the Netherlands, but had hopes of a recovery if surgery was not necessary. Senegal is in Group A, which also includes Qatar and Ecuador.

“Unfortunately today’s examination showed that the evolution was not as favorable as we had imagined. And unfortunately Sadio Mané will not be able to play in this World Cup”, stated the delegation’s doctor, Manuel Alfonso.

Mané was largely responsible for Senegal’s qualification to the Cup. He was also instrumental in winning the African Cup of Nations title at the start of the year.

Argentina also announced a cut this Thursday. Due to a muscle injury, Nicolás González was removed from the list. Ángel Correa, from Atlético de Madrid, was called up in his place, according to a statement from the country’s football federation.

Another selection that has also been going through physical problems is France. The current world champions already have four casualties in the tournament: striker Christopher Nkunku, defender Kimpembe and midfielders Kanté and Pogba.
