The recipe for the American cake – Young and old will love it!

by

It’s actually a fluffy vanilla cake, with brown sugar, cinnamon and cream cheese.

What you will need for the cake:

  • 1 ½ cups (187 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • ¾ cup (149 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup (113 g) buttermilk

For the sugar-cinnamon swirl:

  • ⅓ cup (66g) brown sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • For the cream cheese frosting:
  • 113 g cream cheese softened at room temperature
  • ½ cup (56 g) powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 to 5 tablespoons of milk of choice

How to make it:

For the cake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Grease a square cake pan. Line the bottom of the cake pan on a piece of non-stick paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Put them aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and granulated sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating on medium speed until fully incorporated after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and beat briefly to combine.
  5. Add one-third of the flour mixture and beat on low speed until smooth, then add half the buttermilk and beat again on low speed.
  6. Repeat with the remaining one-third of the flour mixture, the remaining buttermilk, and finish with the last third of the flour mixture. Beat on low speed until the dough is smooth, but do not over mix.
  7. For the swirl: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar and cinnamon until combined.
  8. Spread half of the cake batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly with a spatula. Then sprinkle half of the brown sugar cinnamon mixture evenly over its surface.
  9. Spread the rest of the dough over the cinnamon sugar mixture as evenly as you can – it won’t be perfect, but that won’t be a problem. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar evenly over the top. With a knife make circles and waves in the dough.
  10. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool for 10-15 minutes, then turn it out onto a plate. Let it cool while you prepare the frosting.

For the frosting:

  1. In a large bowl with a mixer, beat the cream cheese on medium speed until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract and beat until combined and a thick mixture.
  2. Add the milk gradually. Drizzle the cream cheese frosting over the cooled cake in diagonal patterns or spread it evenly over the cake.
