“Green light” from the Ministry of Environment for the sale of Christmas trees in Athens, Thessaloniki, Volos, Patras and Alexandroupoli. As fir producers estimate, there may be an increase of 5-10%

There are some who will need to travel tens of kilometers in order to bring Christmas to everyone’s homes, while others will travel many hours for the same purpose. These are the fir producers of Taxiarchis of Halkidiki, who will be at their “posts” in Thessaloniki, Athens, Volos, Patras and Alexandroupolis, on November 26.

With the “green light” given by the Ministry of Environment and Energy for the start of the season for the sale of trees to the points of sale throughout Greece, the fir producers of Taxiarchis rolled up their sleeves and, as explained to APE-MPE by the president of the Taxiarchis community and fir producer and himself, Yiannis Xakis, are taking care of the last details in order for everything to run smoothly this year and to fulfill their role.

According to him, this year the fir producers of the mountainous traditional village, which is built in the “heart” of Holomontas, have received the permit for the disposal of 35,000 fir trees in the Greek and foreign market and if they finally manage to sell them all, then “we will have set a new sales record, since last year we surpassed all previous ones by having 30,000-32,000 trees”, explains Mr. Xakis.

This year is predicted to be “extremely positive”, according to him, since the phone has been on fire since last week and the pre-orders are pouring in. “Indeed”, he emphasizes, “many traders from different regions of the country have made their appearance in our village, closing close deals with fir producers”.

“They are calling us again this year from Greek islands, such as Syros, in order to send them firs”, underlines Mr. Xakis with satisfaction, adding that just like last year, Taxiarchi firs will decorate many households in Albania, while trees will also be sent to Cyprus, which remain loyal customers of his fir producers. Holomont. Last year, Taxiarchis fir growers sent more than 300 trees to Albania and over 2000 trees to Cyprus.

Regarding the price of fir trees, the president of the Taxiarchi community repeats that if finally there is an increase in the price of trees, which has remained constant for more than ten years, it will not exceed 5%-10% and this is mainly due to the increase in transport costs and energy.

It is reminded that Last year, in Thessaloniki, the price of a fir tree ranged from 30-100 euros and 40-150 euros in Athens.

The “signal” for the start of this year’s festive season in our country was given again this year by Taxiarchis, where on 7/11 a 16-meter fir tree was lit up in the central square of the village, which was decorated with over 85,000 lights, thousands of colorful ornaments and a large gold star on top of it.

Fir cultivation is a very demanding occupation and up to twelve hours of work per day may be needed in some of its stages. The seed is planted in the Spring, then nurseries are made for three years and when the plant grows, it is transplanted into a pot or into the ground, while the tree will need several years to “get” height. “If they don’t go through the nursery, the trees can take eight to ten years to be cut and sold. There are also three-meter trees that can take 12 years,” explains Mr. Xakis.

In the mountainous village of Halkidiki, the majority of the residents, aged between 20 and 80 years, are also engaged in the cultivation of fir trees, making 75% of the Christmas trees available on the Greek market.
