OKANA: Dependencies from Denmark, France, Germany, Portugal visited XEX for the exchange of know-how – Model in Europe

The best practice applied by OKANA in dealing with addiction has received extensive publicity in Europe. His human-centered and holistic approach to dealing with addictions in the country, once again gathers the interest of the European scientific community.

In particular, the practice of OKANA has aroused the intense interest of many European agencies and experts dealing with addictions. After the first Meeting of Professionals of the European Harm Reduction Network in Athens (November 1-4, 2022), which took place on the occasion of the creation of the first Supervised Use Space (SSP) and OKANA Day Center/Sleep Center in the country, on Thursday On November 10, 2022, OKANA was visited by the President of the World Organization ISAM – International Society of Addiction Medicine – Professor Alex Baldacchino.

Professor Baldacchino visited, among others, the new XEX STEKI46, the direct access unit, the MABY, the AKHA-Hypnotic and the MOTHE Averof of the Organization. In his speech at OKANA, he did not hide his enthusiasm for the Organization’s structures and approach, typically mentioning the importance of the human-centered model it applies, covering the entire range of needs of both active substance users in harm reduction, as well as those benefiting from the programs his treatment. He characterized OKANA as a model Organization, as it includes a wide range of services and care provided, from safe use and education to hygiene and homelessness care, from therapeutic approach and interconnection to multi-level medical nursing support and essential social care. Professor Baldacchino awarded OKANA the designation of an integrated, unique in Europe, Center of Excellence and Practices for dealing with addiction.

In the wake of the important distinctions that OKANA’s practice has received, educational visits have been carried out by European agencies and Universities, in order to see first-hand the application of the innovative methods used by the Organization in direct access and harm reduction. The new XEX has been visited by dependency operators from Denmark, France, Germany and Portugal for the exchange of know-how. To these is added the presentation of the OKANA model to the English Parliament and the University of Oxford as a practice to be adopted by the United Kingdom.
All this has brought our country and OKANA to the center of Europe and the international community, making its scientific practices a model of application.

Finally, it is noted that in recent years significant efforts have been made by the Management of OKANA and its President, Thanasis Theoharis. Recognizing the real needs of this vulnerable population of substance users, the President of OKANA, Mr. Theocharis, proceeded to readjust the operation of the Organization by adopting a human-centered model of holistic treatment of addiction and substantial coverage of their needs, making OKANA a point of reference in the international field .
