A new era in football: The coach of Morocco picked up the… purple card and made a “challenge”

by

The football in recent years it has entered a new era. OR technology is increasingly infiltrating the sport, with the aim of making it fairer and minimizing referee errors or oversights.

Goal line technology, the use of VAR and other tools have contributed significantly to making more correct decisions by referees. However, a new regulation may be added in the near future, with a clear influence from the basketball world.

This is the purple cardwhich will be given to each coach before the cross. If the coach of a team considers that the referee has made a wrong decision in a critical phase – such as in the case of a penalty – he will be able to raise the referee in the air and ask challenge. Just as it happened in Morocco-France for the semi-finals of the U20 World Cup.

His coach Morocco, Mohammed Wahbipicked up the purple card in the 72nd minute and sent the referee to VAR to consider a possible penalty case. He then handed the card to the fourth official, essentially having only one ‘opportunity’ to use it in the match.

Nevertheless, the challenge it was not successful, as the referee carried out an on-field review, but upheld his original decision.

This is an experimental procedure, which is being tested by FIFA for the first time in this particular tournament, and it remains to be seen whether it will be decided to apply it to other international competitions or club championships.
