The members of the organization, pretending to be either doctors or police officers, made phone calls to elderly people, where, under the pretext of involving a relative in a car accident, they managed to surprise them and by causing them to panic, bend any resistance and extort money from them and valuables.
The exchange of information and the cooperation of the Police Authorities of Greece and Bulgaria led to the dismantling of a multi-member criminal organization that was active in committing fraud against elderly people in the wider area of Thessaloniki.
Police officers of the Property Rights Protection Department of the Thessaloniki Security Directorate identified the evidence and filed a case file against a total of 11 people (9 Bulgarians – 2 Greeks) for criminal organization and criminal frauds committed and attempted.
According to the police investigation, the members of the organization, pretending to be either doctors or police officers, made phone calls to elderly people, where, under the pretext of involving a relative in a car accident, they managed to surprise them and by causing them to panic, bend any resistance and extort money from them and valuables.
It was found that between the middle of August 2019 and the middle of January 2020 in the wider area of Thessaloniki, in a total of 18 cases, the amount of money of 250,220 euros and valuables with a total value of 14,000 euros were stolen, while they attempted 6 more times to steal the money of 74,000 euros, but without succeeding, as they were noticed by their potential victims.
Worth noting that four senior executives, who made the calls to the elderly and two more members of the organization, who went to the homes of the victims in order to receive the sums of money, were arrested for similar offenses in an operation by the Bulgarian authorities in 2020, while a 27-year-old member of the ring was arrested in Thessaloniki on 11-05-2021 by the Property Rights Protection Department.
The file will be submitted to the competent Prosecutor.
