“Last week the world population reached 8 billion. But at the same time our natural resources are shrinking. This is also the great challenge for the coming decades, this is the great challenge of the 21st century”, stressed Kostas Bakoyannis.

Mr. Bakoyiannis referred to the projects that have been implemented in Athens, with the aim of a more sustainable city, more in harmony with the protection of the environment and natural wealth. As is the Double Regeneration and the new city within the city, implemented in Botanikos, with a percentage more than 50% in Eleonas to be green.

The mayor of Athens referred to the importance of cities, local communities and municipalities in taking meaningful actions for the environment, emphasizing that “for the first time cities, municipalities and the private sector were so much ahead of the states. They established alliances, they took initiatives, they give birth to hope and optimism. And this is why the role of cities is so important. Municipalities are the closest democratic institution to the citizen”, Mr. Bakoyiannis pointed out to add that “we are judged by whether we are in a position to provide real solutions to real problems. Over 60% of the world’s carbon dioxide is emitted from urban centers. We have no alibi and excuses, we have to move forward. This is what Athens is doing. Tackling the climate crisis is at the heart of every decision we make, big or small.”

Mr. Bakoyiannis argued that the climate crisis is not based on ideologies and political parties. What counts above all, is the way of thinking and mentality with a view to protecting the environment but also combating social inequalities in modern urban centers, which are constantly increasing.
