“The Turkish Air Force launched five strikes against Kurdish security forces (Assayes) inside the camp,” Farhad, a spokesman for the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), told AFP.
Under Kurdish control, the overcrowded al-Hol camp houses more than 50,000 relatives of jihadists since the defeat of the Islamic State (IS) group, Syrian displaced persons and Iraqi refugees.
Among them, at least 10,000 foreigners from about 60 countries, including French and other Europeans.
The SDF spokesman warned that “some IS families may have escaped the camp” taking advantage of the chaos.
Despite repeated urgings from the semi-autonomous Kurdish administration, most Western countries refuse to repatriate their citizens, contenting themselves with repatriating a handful of people, as they express fears of possible terrorist acts on their soil.
Turkey continued to target Kurdish militant positions in northern Syria today, a prelude to a possible ground operation by Ankara, which it says wants to “secure” its southern border.
