Work is progressing – The first metropontikas will start its underground journey in Athens in early 2023 and the second one will start digging from the Veikos construction site in late spring 2023
The transport map of Attica is expected to be changed by Metro Line 4 as – with the completion of the construction of the first section, “Alsos Veikou – Goudi” – 340,000 passengers will move on a daily basis and the distance Galatsi – Goudi will be covered in 17 minutes.
For the first section of Line 4 that will connect Alsos Veikou with Goudi, preliminary work is progressing, construction sites and wells have been set up at stations, and the first meter is already at the Katehaki construction site, where it will be assembled, to begin its underground journey in Athens in early 2023.
The second metropontika, which will be transferred to the Veiko construction site, is expected to start its journey at the end of spring 2023.
The two new metropontics, one will dig from the Veikou Well and the other will dig from the Katehaki Well, will “meet” and be dismantled at the Evangelismos Well having built 12.8 km of ready-made tunnel with 15 new underground stations.
These are Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, Helikonos, Kypseli, Courts, Alexandras, Exarchia, Academy, Kolonaki, Evangelismos, Kaisariani, University Campus, Zografou, Ilisia, Goudi.
Benefits of the Line
The section of Line 4 “Alsos Veikou – Goudi”, according to the current schedule, is estimated to be in operation for the passenger public in 2029 and has been designed with the aim of serving many densely populated areas of Lekanopedi, the center of Athens with the construction of four new stations (Exarchia, Akadimia, Kolonaki, Evangelismos), the decongestion of existing central Metro stations due to the ever-increasing demand of the passenger public, the service of many important buildings and facilities, such as Hospitals, Educational Institutions (such as the Courts, the National Technical University of Athens, the National Archaeological Museum, the Ministry of Culture, the Law School of the E.K.P.A., the Benaki Museum (Koumpari building) , the British Council, the University Campus, as well as increasing the networking of the existing Metro Lines with 2 connecting stations (University/Academy, Evangelismos).Academy station connection to University station (line 2) and Evangelismos station (connection to line 3) .
The Alsos Veikou – Campus route will last 14 minutes, the Alsos Veikou – Courts route will last 5 minutes and the Alsos Veikou – Goudi route will last 17 minutes.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Attica Metro, in total it is estimated that approximately 340,000 passengers will travel with this project per day, 125,000 of them will be workers, while car journeys are expected to decrease by approximately 53,000 per day. Therefore, a reduction in pollutants is expected with the amount of CO2 that will not be released into the city’s atmosphere by passengers who will use the Metro instead of their cars, which is estimated at 318 tons/day.
Among the benefits of the project are the upgrading of the areas and the value of real estate – shops and the contribution to culture by carrying out an archaeological survey of a total area of 45,000 sq.m., while the urban renewals at the 15 stations of Line 4 will be 85,000 sq.m. and 3,000 tree plantings. More than 5,000 new jobs are expected to be created during the construction of the project.
Project innovations
One of the great innovations will be the installation and operation of automated doors on trains and platforms for the safety of passengers, as in the Thessaloniki Metro.
This means that trains will enter the station, stop and the security doors will open along with the train doors.
Technologically advanced signaling and train control system. Also, the trains will be driverless, their operation will be controlled through the Control Center of Line 4, modern aesthetic trains made of environmentally friendly materials, almost fully recyclable.
Overall design of Line 4
Finally, according to the overall planning of Line 4, after the completion of the first section, the second section of Line 4 to Marousi will start from this position. The area will therefore be upgraded to a transportation hub with Lines 3 and 4 of the Metro connecting the northern and eastern suburbs of Athens and the center.
The next sections that will be under construction are the following:
Section B: Goudi-Marousi (9.6 km long and 8 stations)
Section C: Evangelismos-Ano Ilioupoli (4.1 km long and 3 stations)
Section D: Alsos Veikou-Petroupoli (7.5 km long and 6 stations)
