Thessaloniki: Police operation for the evacuation of an occupied building

by

Another occupied space was evacuated at 6 am on Monday by the Greek Police in Thessaloniki. This is the three-storey building located at the junction of Filippou and Siatistis streets in the center of the city.

Since 2015 it has been the headquarters of an anti-authoritarian group known by the phrase “mundo nuevo”, in Greek “new world”.

According to information from Thestival, police officers from various services of the GATH took part in the evacuation operation. Police officers from the OPKE team and the State Security Sub-Directorate assumed the key roles in the implementation of the evacuation. During the police raid on the building, 4 people were found, who were arrested. The police operation was supervised by a judicial officer.

The authorities proceeded to confiscate items found inside the building. During the operation, DAETH police officers brought in 3 people who moved from Olymbou Street towards the occupation and were deemed suspicious.

It has been occupied since November 2015

The specific building belongs to the Municipality of Thermi. It has been under occupation since November 2015. Then a group of anti-authoritarians from the collective for Social Anarchism “Black & Red” decided to occupy the space that had been left to its fate a year earlier.

The building had operated since 2000 as a Refugee Reception Center and Homeless Hostel, but after 14 years of operation, it was closed by prosecutorial order in December 2014, as unpaid electricity and water bills had accumulated.

It is recalled that four months ago GATH evacuated yet another occupation of anti-authoritarians on Egnatia Street.
