Evia: The unknown fault is an “enigma” – “We don’t know if the 5 Richter was the main earthquake”

“We recommend calmness, we are monitoring the evolution of the phenomenon” the president of the OASP Efthymios Lekkas told SKAI.

Last night’s (Tuesday) earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale in the area of South Evia south-southeast of Zarakes settlement with dozens of aftershocks. This is the same focal area that produced a 4.7 Richter earthquake yesterday morning, which was followed by 53 aftershocks.

It is an unknown fault, with scientists asking for time to examine more seismic data to determine whether Tuesday’s magnitude 5 was it the main earthquake or if it is a series.

Speaking to SKAI, Athanasios Bourandas, Mayor of Kymi – Aliveri, spoke of residents’ disturbance as the earthquake that occurred last night was stronger than in the morning.

However, according to him and the mayor of Karystos, Efthimios Raviolos, who spoke to our station, as well as the latest information from the fire department, there are no reports of damage so far.

In the wider area after the earthquake, Fire and Police forces are patrolling, while Coast Guard forces have been mobilized.

All EMAKs are also on heightened alert.

The Fire Department appeals to citizens to be especially careful and follow the instructions of the competent authorities. Today, Wednesday, schools of all grades in Southern Evia will remain closed.

“We recommend calmness, we are monitoring the evolution of the phenomenon,” the president of the Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection Organization, Efthimios Lekkas, told SKAI.

Ganas: “We don’t know if the 5 Richter was the master”

The Geodynamic Institute research director and seismologist Thanasis Ganas he told SKAI 100.3 that we need other data to see how big the fault is and what potential it has.

He added, however, that we are not talking about a fault that can give 6 Richter. He pointed out, however, that “we still cannot say that the 5 Richter is the main earthquake”.

He said that residents living in old houses in villages in the Styro area should be careful.

Mr. Ganas also stated that there is no reason to worry about faults near Athens and added that the earthquakes are felt because of the close distance.

Papadopoulos: “We need time”

“We don’t know if 5 Richter was the master” said Gerasimos Papadopoulos in his Facebook post.

1. Hasty and flippant opinion yesterday that yesterday’s 4.7 was probably the main one. Personally I was very wary.
2. Nor do we know if the evening 5.0 earthquake is the main one. It needs careful consideration and consideration of many elements. So we need time.
3. Whoever opened a public discussion about the Alkyonides yesterday should close it immediately. We have no serious evidence, but we are not allowed to discuss it publicly at a time when Evia is in full agitation.

With the new earthquake, the facts are changing, says Akis Tselentis

He made his own assessment of the earthquake in his post on Tuesday and Akis Tselentis.

We just had a slightly larger earthquake (2 tenths of a magnitude larger) magnitude 5.0,EPIK:6 XLM. NA TÓN ZAPAKÓN EYBOIAS ie in the same seismic area. With the new earthquake, the facts change and we have to wait a bit to see the development. As I have repeatedly mentioned today, residents should avoid stone houses. The last earthquake will have its own aftershock sequence.
