Through gov.gr, the civil marriage license is now issued by the municipalities of the country. Citizens have the possibility to digitally request the issuance of a civil marriage license from their municipality and receive it in their personal inbox (my.gov.gr) in accordance with the joint decision of the Minister of Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis and the Deputy Minister of Digital Governance Theodoris Livaniou and in collaboration with the Minister of the Interior Makis Voridis and the Deputy Minister Stelios Petsa.
The service is accessible via gov.gr, in the “Family” section and the “Marriage / cohabitation” sub-section. Through a particularly simple process, interested parties can complete all the procedures required to perform a civil marriage quickly, easily and without unnecessary paperwork. Specifically:
1. Either of the two future spouses enters the platform using Taxisnet or web banking codes
2. Fill in his/her information, that of his/her future spouse and attach the page of the newspaper where the marriage announcement was published, as well as a proof of permanent residence
3. Issues and pays the relevant electronic fee and
4. Submits the application
The civil marriage license is issued after seven (7) calendar days, so that there is the necessary period of time for submitting complaints. After its issuance, the civil marriage license is sent to the citizen’s inbox (my.gov.gr), who is informed via e-mail and text message (SMS).
It is clarified that the digital service for issuing a civil marriage license is provided through the mailboxes of the municipalities at gov.gr. The Ministry of Digital Governance has already created mailboxes for all of the country’s 332 municipalities. The box is activated upon request of each municipality. So far 159 municipalities of the country have activated their mailbox. The issuance of a civil marriage license through gov.gr comes to be added to the joint actions planned and implemented for more than three years by the Ministries of Digital Governance and Interior for the digitization of municipal services, with the support of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece. The design and development of the service was done by the General Secretariat of Digital Governance and Process Simplification and the National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network (EDYTE SA – GRNET) with the support of applications from the General Secretariat of Public Administration Information Systems of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
