Terms and conditions for the creation of parking spaces for motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles
The terms and conditions for the establishment and operation of motorcycle, moped and bicycle stations – as independent facilities or as complementary facilities within other facilities – are determined by a ministerial decision signed by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Transport Michalis Papadopoulos.
Based on the decision, the stations are divided into private and public use and are used for parking motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles.
The space can be:
– closed sheltered inside a building installation,
– partially covered and open on one or more sides,
– outdoors with or without the use of a shade,
– any combination of the above premises.
Stations are not required to have a minimum useful area of covered space, nor any limitation on the number of parking spaces for two-wheelers.
The siting of the stations takes place in areas where it is permitted by the relevant urban planning provisions on land uses and under the conditions described in the specific Decision.
Each station, at the entrance and exit, must have appropriate signage to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians and road safety during the entry and exit of vehicles to and from the station, as well as electric lighting.
The decision also defines the technical specifications regarding the minimum dimensions of the parking spaces and the slopes on the surface of the stations, the turns and the area of maneuvers for the parking of the two-wheelers.
The indicative dimensions of motorcycles and mopeds taken into account are as follows:
– Moped: length 1.80 m and width 0.80 m.
– Motorcycle: length 2.30 m and width 1.40 m.
The minimum width of traffic lanes in the case of a one-way lane is two meters (2m) and in the case of a two-way lane four meters (4m).
Also, horizontal marking of road surfaces and vertical marking with signs are foreseen, in accordance with the provisions of the Road Traffic Code.
It is noted that the prospective operators of motorcycle, moped and bicycle stations must announce the start of operation of a station for private use, based on the applicable provisions.
The stations that have been active before the entry into force of this decision must comply with its provisions within eighteen (18) months from its publication.
On the occasion of the decision on the zoning of parking spaces for motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles, the Deputy Minister of Transport Michalis Papadopoulos said: “We are creating for the first time a clear framework of rules to create parking spaces for two-wheelers in our cities. Organized parking spaces can contribute to addressing the problem of parking motorcycles and mopeds, ensuring more public space for pedestrians and, at the same time, protecting the property of vehicle owners. In addition, the possibility of parking bicycles is also offered, given the increase in their use, but also the high value that many modern bicycles now have, due to their technological upgrading”.
