Papadopoulos for Evia to SKAI: “We cannot say with certainty that it was the main earthquake”

“We don’t have complete knowledge of the area, we don’t have good knowledge of the fault, we don’t know in the past if there have been strong earthquakes in the area and this does not help the estimates” pointed out the seismologist and member of the Seismic Risk Assessment Committee

Residents of southern Evia are on alert for the possibility of a new strong earthquake after the 5 Richter magnitude that occurred on Tuesday night upset the residents of the area.

The seismologist and member of the Seismic Risk Assessment Committee, Gerasimos Papadopoulos, speaking to SKAI, points out that he cannot say with certainty that yesterday’s magnitude 5 earthquake was the main earthquake, while as he said, seismic activity in the area had started since October 25, however the seismologists did not evaluate it properly.

“There is significant uncertainty arising from specific scientific reasons. Firstly, we do not have complete knowledge of the area, we do not have good knowledge of the fault, we do not know in the past if there have been strong earthquakes in the area and this does not help the estimates. Secondly, the seismic activity in this area started on October 25th with a lot of small earthquakes and this was unfortunately not properly assessed by the community, myself included. And these very small earthquakes convey valuable information to us. So we need time to look at all these elements and in a spirit of consensus. I repeated many times that this State has bodies that are mandated precisely to bring the scientists together through their committees and to discuss” said Mr. Papadopoulos and underlined that he still cannot say with certainty whether the 5 Richter was the main earthquake .

“It needs a lot of attention” he said and added: “We need more time to see all the evidence from October 25 onwards… I think we will also consult with the rest in a way that is beneficial for society first for the state and finally for science.

“We have two possibilities. Either it was the main earthquake and the great danger has passed, or it may not have been the main one and there will be a somewhat larger one. I agree with Mr. Lekkas, that the region does not seem to have the potential to take us to the sixth or sixth place, we have incomplete knowledge of the region but it cannot give that much,” concluded Mr. Papadopoulos.
