As announced by GEETHA, exercise “Eagle” is a regular exercise after free play troops
The bilateral interdisciplinary search and rescue exercise called “Eagle” took place on November 30 in the maritime area between Rhodes and Kastellorizos, with the participation of forces from Greece and Cyprus.
As announced today by GEETHA, exercise “Eagle” is a regular exercise after free play troops.
The Hellenic Armed Forces participated with the gunboat “Nikiphoros” of the Navy, a Super Puma AS-332 helicopter of the Air Force and a floating vessel of the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard, while the National Guard participated with an AW 139 helicopter.
The purpose of the exercise was to test and evaluate the response readiness of the search-rescue system in the event of an air accident within the Athens FIR, which also constitutes the area of responsibility for search-rescue in Greece, as well as to improve the effectiveness of the cooperation of the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center of the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard with the Cyprus Search and Rescue Coordination Center, and their actions in accordance with the applicable International Conventions and the national legislation of the two countries.
The exercise was based on a fictitious scenario, according to which a Greek civilian aircraft performed a ground landing within the limits of the Athens FIR, following a failure of its engines.
The search-rescue system of Greece and Cyprus was immediately activated and a search, rescue and recovery was carried out using a hoist, and the rescued personnel were transported to Rhodes.
