Anna Maria Velli described the abuse she experienced from her ex-partner during her TEDx talk and moved the audience.

The actress said it was an “abusive relationship that in addition to the physical abuse had many incidents of psychological abuse” and that “the signs and red flags were all there from the beginning” but she hadn’t seen them until it was too late.

“At the beginning of our relationship, he started looking for my cell phone and seeing messages from my old relationship and when I replied “my past is none of your business” that’s when I got my first slap.”

After this event there was a period of calm, but the possessiveness was still there.

“One night we were sitting and watching a movie when for no apparent reason he started accusing me of flirting with one of my colleagues. When I told him that this is not the case, he locked me in the room, grabbed my cell phone and started looking for “proofs” of my parallel relationship. When he didn’t find anything, he unlocked me from the room, continued to shout at me and swear at me and in the end he took my head and smashed it on the floor, resulting in this photo” she said, showing the audience an abused image of her.

She also said that while he was accusing her of having an affair at the same time he had several. “Too often I’ve heard that I’m obnoxious, sour, weird. Even if they were true, I don’t think it’s something you would want to hear from your partner” as he said.

He also described an incident where he had to go to the hospital. He was the first person to call and the only one who didn’t come. “He was having coffee with his friends.”
