The message of the President of the Republic for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

by

On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, students from the Special High School for the Deaf and Hard of Agia Paraskevi visited the Presidential Palace.

The students of the Special High School and Lyceum for the Deaf and Hard of Agia Paraskevi were received at the Presidential Palace by the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Regarding this visit, the PtD specifically wrote:

“The halls of the Presidential Palace, which are once again accepting visits from schools, cultural and social clubs, as well as other organizations, have been opened for students from the Special High School and High School for the Deaf and Hard of Agia Paraskevi. Teenagers full of curiosity and interest toured the premises of the Palace, in a guided tour that was done for the first time with interpretation in sign language. Through the contact with these children, as well as with the members of the delegation from the Federation of the Deaf of Greece, the prejudices surrounding the hearing disability were once again disproved and the problems they face in their attempt to fully participate in society were highlighted. We talked about the need for universal access of the deaf to university education and the delays caused to students by the lack of attention to their problem. The emphasis with which they underlined that they claim a life in the light, a life that is participatory and equal, could not leave anyone unmoved.

Today’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities provides an opportunity to remind once again that it is unthinkable for a society that wants to be called inclusive to relegate our fellow citizens to the margins and to dependency, to deprive them, in other words, of their fundamental right to dignity. We must facilitate their daily life, freeing it from the obstacles that make it difficult, and at the same time offering them opportunities for education, skills development, and work. At the same time, let’s combat complacency, indifference, embarrassment or even fear towards them, so as to eliminate social perceptions and stereotypes of bygone eras”.
