The distance of 162 kilometers was crossed by a triathlon athlete from Chania Costas Varouhakis, once again sending a message of support for people with disabilities. Triathlete Kostas Varouhakis started on Friday morning from the municipal stadium of Kissamos and crossed a circular distance of 162 kilometers, finishing shortly after 11 am on Saturday morning.
He crossed the distance with a disabled child Gerasimos Stylianakakiswho was sitting in his wheelchair.
“Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. We are all here to send the message of support to our fellow citizens with disabilities. They have the right to a life with equal rights and opportunities”, said Kostas Varouhakis, concluding his effort.
In recent years, Kostas Varouhakis has developed a special activity to support the Special School for Persons with Disabilities located in his hometown of Kissamos.
In this context, he swam 25 kilometers from Balos to Kissamos, crossed the distance from Sitia to Kissamos by running for 10 days, with Gerasimos and his wheelchair they made the Kissamos – Chania route, while in July he participated in 6 day race held in France. The race of a total distance of 1,130 kilometers included, 900 kilometers of cycling, 211 kilometers of running and 19 kilometers of swimming.
According to the website zarpanews.gr, Kostas Varouhakis, today also claims a place in the Guinness records with the effort he made, together with his friend Gerasimos Stylianakakis, trying to cover a cleared distance while simultaneously pushing his friend’s wheelchair and all this within 24 hours.
