Order for investigation by the prosecutor of Serres- The door of the boiler room was thrown about 40 meters and hit the 11-year-old boy, the son of a well-known doctor of Serres, who was on break in the school yard- The 6-year-old injured student was in Hippocrate of Thessaloniki and in the Hospital of Serres 10-year-old injured
The work done in the boiler room of the 9th primary school of SerrosIn order to replace the oil burner with a geothermal system, they hide the cause of the unimaginable tragedy, which resulted in the death of a boy, a student in the last grade of elementary school, and the injury of two younger children. Serron’s public prosecutor has already given an order to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy and assign responsibility.
According to the data so far, the crews that were doing the work had left when the explosion occurred in the boiler room. It is typical that the door that killed the child was hurled at a distance of about forty meters, while he was in the yard, at break time.
The unfortunate student was taken to Serres General Hospital unconscious, where he was pronounced dead. Two other students aged 6 and 10 were injured: The first is being treated at Hippocrate in Thessaloniki for preventive reasons and the second, after receiving first aid and undergoing tests at the Serres hospital, returned home.
At the time when the tragic incident happened, the unfortunate student and his two classmates, along with other students of the school, were in the yard as they attend the all-day school. With the explosion of the boiler room, which was particularly strong, the door was thrown several meters away, fatally injuring one and slightly injuring the other two. The cause of the explosion remains unknown until now.
According to statements made by the director of the school in the APE – BEE Nikolaos Tsiotsiou, in the school unit, a geothermal system was recently installed, through NSPA, to heat the building, in order to replace the oil boiler. As he mentioned, he disagreed with the said project as it was not a proposal of the school community.
“The burner used to be an oil burner”, underlines Mr. Tsiotsios speaking to APE – BEE. “There was a project in the school unit that I disagreed with. I disagreed many times about this project which was done under the municipality’s responsibility. No bill was given to us. It was a geothermal project done through NSRA as far as I know.”
He maintains that he addressed the competent agency several times requesting the documents for the schedule and its execution without any response. He also points out that while the project was supposed to be completed within a year, in the end, it was completed in two and a half and started working in the last ten days, but as he notes “the word work is in quotation marks because the geothermal had not yet been put into operation”.
Regarding the tragic event that claimed the student’s life, the director of the 9th Primary School of Serres stated that the engineer in charge of the project had informed that due to a fault in the new heating system the school would have to be heated as before, i.e. with oil.
“While the contractor was supposed to come on Saturday,” said Mr. Tsiotsios, “and he had to come on Saturday, because I explained to them thousands of times that I do not allow them to do work during school hours, but I did not find any support for this either from Primary Education nor from the municipality. They generally came whenever they wanted and left whenever they wanted. They finally came today to make the relevant arrangement and told us that from now on we will not turn on the oil boiler as the school will now work with geothermal energy.”
The director claims that he was informed about the explosion of the boiler room by a fellow teacher who was at the school while he had left the school unit and they were at home.
“The boiler room exploded because apparently they didn’t release the oil boiler and let it run normally. I was told that he had been fired. I can’t attribute the explosion to somewhere else, because the boiler was the one that exploded”, argues the director and concludes “I disagreed with this project from the beginning and I had sent the documents that the work should not be done during school hours. Unfortunately, I had no support from any organization.”
The Mayor of Serres appeared shocked and devastated Alexandros Chrysafisfrom the death of the little student of the sixth grade, who was killed after the burner exploded in the boiler room of the school.
In his statements to the media, from the site of the 9th Primary School of Serres, the Mayor of Serres said: “We are all shocked by the loss of the sixth grade mixed student. Our thoughts are with his family, as well as the families of the two other students who were injured in this tragic incident. The police investigation is ongoing. We are here to see exactly what happened. We are determined to find those responsible for this tragedy.”
The Deputy Mayor of Education of the Municipality of Serres was also modest in his statements Giannis Despotidiswho emphasized that he is awaiting the results of the investigation being conducted into the circumstances of the tragic accident.
The following announcement is issued by the Ministries of the Interior and of Education and Religious Affairs:

We are in contact with the municipality responsible for the operation of the school to investigate what exactly has happened.
