ARGO 2021 AWARDS were awarded to eight distinguished Greeks Abroad

The ARGO 2021 AWARDS were awarded yesterday (16/12/21) by SA. the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou to eight distinguished Greeks Abroad, in a special ceremony at the BENAKI MUSEUM / PIRAEUS 138.

This is an initiative of the International ARGO – NETWORK OF GREEK BRUSSELS, which aims to reward extroversion, creation, open horizons and to raise awareness of Greece for the success of its children abroad.

The ARGO 2021 AWARDS were awarded to the following:

• Science Award: Cyprus Nikolaidis, Professor of Fetal Medicine at King’s College London (UK).
• Culture and Arts Award: Jeffrey Eugenides, Author (USA).
• Entrepreneurship Award: George Giankopoulos, President and Director of the Scientific Team, Regeneron Laboratories (USA).
• Innovation Award: Anastasia Ailamaki, Professor of Computer Science (SWITZERLAND).
• Humanitarian Award: Archimandrite Dr. Themistoklis Adamopoulos, Protosyggellos of the Holy Metropolis of Guinea (SIERRA LEONE / AUSTRALIA).
• Public Offer Award: Margaritis Schoinas, Vice-President of the European Commission (BELGIUM).
• Sports Award: Lefteris Petrounias, Double Olympic Instrumental Gymnastics (Rio de Janeiro – Tokyo)
• Gastronomy Award: Costas Spiliadis, Founder of MILOS restaurants (CANADA)

The eight winners were selected by a Committee chaired by Om. Professor of the Law School of AUTh, former President of the Court of the European Union, Mr. Vassilis Skouris, and their Members:

• Dino Arkoumani, Ohm. Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of London, President of the Academic Council of the Metropolitan College
• Marco Veremi, Upstream President, Partner Big Pi Venture Capital
• Efthymio Vidalis, Chairman of the BSE Executive Committee
• Irini Geroulanou, Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Benaki Museum
• Panagiotis Giannakis, Basketball coach
• Nikiforos Diamandouros, Academic, former European Ombudsman
• Annie Iliopoulou, Businessman – Publisher
• Michalis Bletsas, Researcher / Director of Informatics MIT Media Lab
• Spyros Pappas, Lawyer, former Director-General of the European Commission
• Athanasios Savvakis, Businessman
• Giannis Spanolio, President “TOGETHER WE CAN”

The ARGO 2021 AWARDS Award Ceremony was coordinated by the journalist, Mr. Pavlos Tsimas.

The Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Vassilis Skouris, stated in his greeting: “We all know that the Greeks of the Diaspora excel in most aspects of social life, display scientific work of known importance, discover innovative solutions, hold leadership positions in large companies, promote decisively arts and culture, are pioneers in the humanitarian contribution, achieve great success in sports “.

The President of the International ARGO Association – NETWORK OF GREEK BRUSSELS, Mr. Spyros A. Pappas, presenting the initiative of creating the institution of ARGO AWARDS, said: “Argo is ready to enter the phase of the combined utilization of these Greeks, aiming at actions on major issues concerning Hellenism”.

ARGO – NETWORK OF GREEK BRUSSELS (www.argo-network.eu) is the Network of Greeks Abroad active in the private sector with a focus on Brussels (freelancers: lawyers, doctors, engineers, economists, as well as business executives and entrepreneurs). The aim of this International Union is networking between members and collaborations, as well as common reflection on current national issues within the European Union, possibly drawing conclusions and submitting proposals, when and where the common know-how of the members will could serve the common good. Thanks to the prestige of the Network, Argo quickly attracted the Greek officials who work in the European Institutions and who, now, participate in groups in its actions, as a friend. Corresponding homologous Associations at key points around the world are being set up for optimal communication and coordination of the Network of Greeks Abroad.
