The lighting of the Christmas tree took place amid a spectacular 5-minute fireworks display
Christmas was “flooded” tonight in Thessaloniki, after the mayor of the city Konstantinos Zervas gave the signal to light the Christmas tree in Aristotelous Square, declaring the beginning of the festivities in the city.
The lighting of the Christmas tree took place in the midst of an impressive 5-minute fireworks show.
The Mayor of Thessaloniki Konstantinos Zervas noted that this year “may all people have health, light and solidarity in their hearts” and then wished everyone a happy birthday. Immediately after that, he pressed the button to light up the imposing 18-meter-high Christmas tree in Aristotelous Square, as well as the overall decorations that bring the festive atmosphere to the city this Christmas.
On the main stage, along with Mr. Zervas, there were representatives of the city’s agencies and companies that helped make the city brighter and more festive this Christmas.
The Municipality of Thessaloniki, due to the energy crisis, ensured that this year the energy consumption for the city’s festive lighting is 58% lower than last year.
The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Thessaloniki gave a special note to the Christmas evening with its Christmas tunes.
The event was presented by the well-known presenter and businessman Tasos Sofroniou.
The evening takes off with his great hits by the well-known singer Petros Iakovides, with the hundreds of Thessalonians arriving before 18:00 at Aristotelous Square, not stopping to dance and sing.
Light show, 500,000 lanterns and 250 fir trees
The festive scene set up in the square and on the axis of Aristotelous enchanted young and old alike. The central Christmas tree that adorns the festive Aristotelous Square traveled to Thessaloniki from the Taxiarch of Halkidiki and is illuminated with approximately 50,000 LED lamps.
In total, the axis of Aristotle up to the height of Philippou is illuminated with 500,000 low-energy lamps with a moving light show, while the festive decoration is completed by the approximately 250 fir trees that have been placed from the beach to the Ancient Agora square.
Solar panels were placed on the roofs of the two central houses erected in Aristotelous Square, which contribute to the energy supply of the square and reduce energy consumption even more.
In the Ancient Agora square, near the statue of Venizelos, the Christmas market set up for the holiday season has already opened its doors.
